This week Gilles returns from Bali, with a stack of new music. There’s some soulful business from Robert Glasper’s forthcoming Blue Note album, newness from Chicago’s finest, Common, and a brand new Georgia Anne Muldrow/Madlib collaboration.
But it wasn’t all smooth! Gilles also went a bit harder with the new Scuba single, a cut from Machinedrum’s forthcoming EP on Lucky Me, and some Roots Manuva. Plus he touched on some grooves from Bali, Mali and Chile for the crew who like it exotic!

Craig Charles hosts a funk and soul-themed New Year’s Eve party featuring Smoove & Turrell in session.
Since the release of their debut album in 2009, Geordie duo Smoove & Turrell have gone from being complete unknowns to performing to over 10,000 people at Glastonbury. Their first single I Can’t Give You Up became one of the most sought after 7″ releases of the year, and a hot topic on mod and northern soul forums.
Producer Smoove has a long career behind him, including that of a solo artist signed to the Acid Jazz imprint in its heyday; while blues singer John Turrell featured in Craig’s own Fantasy Funk Band. Second album, Eccentric Audio, has been well received with single Hard Work recently receiving national airplay on Radio 2.
